503 HP vs. 707 HP

Comparable

Hellcat Charger is my pick. 4-door full-sized car that you can take your kids, co-workers, and significant others, screaming their heads off, to school and events while still visiting the track on weekends.

weight differential makes the hp gap less apparent...c63 weighs less but has less hp... 3400lbs vs 4200 lbs.

Hellcat. I think its a job well done. It has completely changed my mind about the Challenger. It comes with a manual, the C63 does not. I imagine it will be cheaper to operate. Also RWD the while the other car probably won't be. Which means burnouts so that the terrorists don't win.

I'd rather have the old one with the M156.

This new 4.0 turbo engine does not impress me.

As much as I'd like a Hellcat, I have a feeling that if you have an AMG you look like some business kind of douche, whereas the Hellcat will make you look like a douchey kind of douche.

C63 — I've a preference for Euro and Asian over American but in this case it's aesthetics, a more finely tuned precision feel and what i can only assume is much better handling.

I do think the Hellcat is impressive though, as far as American cars go.

Definitely the AMG. Sure, it's got less power but it also weighs something like 800lbs less. Personally, I think the AMG looks infinitely better than the Hellcat, and it will undoubtedly handle better as well. It probably come in AWD, which I like, and I don't mind paddles in a car like this at all. Also, I'm a snob who likes European (though specifically German) cars. And have you seen this interior?? Wunderbar.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and there's an estate version. Will the U.S. get it? No, but it still exists.

It weighs significantly more than the outgoing motor, makes only a slight bit more power.

Hp/l is meaningless number.

The compression ratio is too high to just up the boost on.

Horsepower isn't everything. Doesn't it make a good bit more torque over a much wider spread? I know those 6.2 AMG V8s can be peaky. Also, how much more weight in an engine is significant in a 3500 pound car?

For the record I tend to be a fan of N/A engines over boosted and prefer the M156 as well. Just arguing for the sake of discussion.

Peaky is a relative term...generally it is reserved when referring to small displacement, high rpm motors.

I've been behind the wheel of M156-powered AMG's many times....the M156 delivers power in a linear manner, but make no mistake, it makes monster torque and power everywhere.

M156 = 422 lbs. M178 = 460lbs. The N178 is needlessly complicated, and will be harder to modify as it is already 10.5-1 compression, with direct injection, MB is already shoving 17psi down the bores, there isnt much headroom on this engine. Where as the M156 has plenty. I also have concerns about heatsoak from the hot-v configuration.

Plus the fact that for all its technology it only musters 469 or 503 hp, when both BMW and Audi produce more power from roughly the same engine. Not to mention that if you throw "non-competitor" engines like the LT-4 which produces 147 more ponies and only weighs 69lbs more.

Dang it. They went from "horribly ugly" front end to "Oh wow, that's really good looking."

I'm gonna have to second you here. If i'm going with the "i dont care how heavy it is because i have way too much power" philosophy, you might as well go big.

See, i have the exact opposite reaction. With the SRT at least i'm projecting the idea that I know i'm a douche. Which is somehow better.

I just envision a C63 driver as the guy who believes that everyone in the world should like him even though he gives them no reason to do so.

Well, the article linked specifically states a little over 3600lbs for the new AMG. It's still significantly lighter, but 3600lbs vs 3400lbs is the difference between a car that's a little on the light side vs a car that's a little on the heavy side.

707HP of tire destroying goodness, or 503HP of expensive repairs?

Sorry, but Mopar or No Car on this one.

If I took both cars and thrashed them equally on the track, the Challenger will probably take the abuse better over the long term. I own an AMG SL, I think I have a little weight to my statement about their quality and repair costs.

do the math for horsepower to weight.
hellcat is about 1hp per 6lbs of weight

AMG is 7 pounds to 1hp

The SLS is a different animal completely. The SL class is Mercedes top of the line, throw everything at it model. I have an older one, he has a newer one. They're different animals. Abuse them, and it will come back to haunt you.

The abuse you could inflict on the Hellcat is way worse than what I'd want to do inflict on a C63, and still be able to get away with it. The SL class is in a league of it's own, if you were to compare the Hellcat to the AMG GT or the SLS or the SL63, then the SL will absolutely take more of a beating than the Hellcat would.

The original question however, doesn't compare the Hellcat to the SL class, and therefore I have my specific answer. But if you tossed an SL around the track and something broke, you may as well leave your stack of blank checks. I'm slowly doing an overhaul on an SL600 that I bought, but seriously, if BTU takes as good care of his SLS that I'm sure he does, he'll never have to worry about the serious repair bills. And while I could be wrong, I don't think he flogs the thing beyond it's limits on the track much.
